Louis’ father, Peter Bird, was the first man to row the Pacific Ocean solo. He spent 294 days at sea on his journey from San Francisco, California to Australia in 1983. Peter Bird made several attempts to row the Pacific Ocean again during the 1990’s, this time in the opposite direction from Vladivostock,Russia to San Francisco, California. On June 2nd 1996 Peter Bird was separated from his boat in the North Pacific 1000 miles and two months into his voyage, only his boat was found.

In embarking on this row, Louis believes that he will come to understand something about his father and what made him spend over 1000 combined days at sea during his life. To feel closer to his father is something he believes can only truly be achieved over a thousand miles from land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

To make a documentary about his fathers legendary status within ocean rowing, and the journey to find out about a man he doesn’t truly know has always been Louis’ ultimate goal. Every step of Louis and James’ time at sea will be filmed, and this footage will form a part of Louis’ documentary about his father which will begin to take shape on their return in 2016.

Erden is joining the race on late notice to support Louis on his crossing when James Jones had to withdraw for health reasons.

Erden is an experienced ocean rower with multiple Guinness records. He began ocean rowing in 2005 and has since logged close to 29,000 nautical miles and 876 days using the same rowboat. He has carried the logo of Peter Bird on his boat since 2007 when he launched on the Pacific Ocean from Bodega Bay near the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County where Peter once lived. Erden feels this crossing will be a very profound experience for both rowers. Besides, Erden will have his 55th birthday at sea during this row to Honolulu and what better way to celebrate a “life reimagined.”
