IT’S RACE DAY!
Final preparations are being made before this afternoons start of the Great Pacific Race. The boats will gather at 1630 (4:30 pm) outside the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club. From there, each team will be announced as they parade out to the start line. The official race start will be at 1800 (6:00 pm).
There are still a few bits and bobs that need to be sorted and done on a few of the boats, but teams are generally ready this morning. The forecast for today has started a bit overcast with light winds from the northwest. We anticipate that the marine layer will bake off by early afternoon, and that we will have calm seas as the teams row off into the sunset and start their journeys to Hawaii.
Media teams are getting in final interviews with crews and many family members and friends are down on the docks spending as much time as possible with crews as they finish up their preparations for their ocean crossing.
Earlier this week, teams and their host families gathered at the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club for a fun, lively and eventful evening. Race Management and all of the crews expressed their sincere gratitude to the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club for their continued support and providing the event with a home base here in Monterey. Many of the crews were graciously hosted by families of the yacht club, who also joined us for dinner.
On Friday afternoon, teams were treated to a champagne toast hosted by The Wharf Marketplace. With its location adjacent to the boat park, crews have been spotted at The Wharf Marketplace for many fabulous breakfasts, snacks, and lunches. Race Management as well as all of the crews are very thankful for their hospitality, great food and tasty coffee!
All are welcome to come down to the Monterey Harbor for the gathering of boat and the parade out to the start line, starting at 4:30 pm.
